To change your fate.” Tears blurred her vision. “But honey, I’d rather stay here with you—” “No!” he interrupted, his voice firm yet loving. “Mommy, if you go back, you’ll see us again—me, Daddy, and my sibling. But you must be strong.”

I pretended to be considering his offer and with a smile that didn't completely reach my eyes I made my comeback. “I'll think about it and get back to you.”

7:00am I had just returned from a week-long vacation. The door was left unlocked which was not unusual. I made my way in and realized that no one was in. I sent a text to my boss and she called me back. After the warm greetings, she instructed me to get some vegetables from the Mart; which I did. When I returned she was back already. She told me that her husband was supposed to visit and she would be the one to do the cooking. We were still having the discussion when Mr Trevor arrived. The couple walked into the bedroom and I retired to my room.

Reality crashed back immediately. I ended the call and looked at Celyne. Reluctantly. Painfully. “We have to go.” She nodded. As though she expected it. We walked toward the exit together. Before leaving, she glanced back one final time. “So.” A faint smile touched her lips. “I hope we will get to come back again.” I nodded. “Yes.” “Maybe one day we’ll come back again.” I Hope we will come back. I could see the Sadness in her eyes

“But one day,this will all come back to haunt you.” “Maybe. But until then, you are mine to control. Don’t forget that.”

Annie didn’t speak immediately, and that alone told me everything I needed to know. “You’re not going,” she said finally. I looked at her. “I don’t know if I can ignore it anymore.” “You can,” she said firmly. “And you will.” “But what if” “There is no ‘what if’ that ends well with someone who keeps showing up like this,” she interrupted. I lowered my gaze. “I just don’t understand why now,” I admitted. Annie softened slightly. “People from the past don’t always return because they care,” she said gently. “Sometimes they return because they think they still have access to you.”

I need to remember that. "That's right. I want to go back tomorrow." I said, familiar vengeance settling in my bones. Playtime is over.

Tomorrow, we rebuild. Again.

“Then come back!” The pull is almost unbearable now. Not painful. Not destructive. Absolute. Like something is claiming what it has already decided belongs to it. And in that moment— Everything becomes clear. Staying does not end this. Returning does not stop it. But returning— Returning gives us a chance. A chance to understand. A chance to fight. A chance to do something more than delay the inevitable. I open my eyes. Or whatever this place considers eyes. And I choose. “I am coming back,” I say.

Whatever Project Rebirth truly is It’s coming back for me. And this time, it knows exactly who I’ve become.
