My hands clawed at the floor as something ripped through skin and bone. Wings. Not feathered. Not scaled. But something in between made of shadow and light, stretching high above me, shaking the hall with their power. Everyone stared. Kael’s growl broke the quiet, his voice raw with both awe and rage. “Wings. Harbinger wings.” Lucien’s lips curved in a dangerous smile. “Beautiful. More beautiful than I ever imagined.” Darius’s fire faded at his hands, his face carved with fear. “That’s not beauty. That’s destruction.”

"Extend your right wing please." Tove's wing shot out. We ducked as it created a canopy that was almost the full size of our living room. Drace hunched under the wing with us. "Now, wings are very sensitive. They have to be for flying. We need to know how the air is moving in order for us to do what we need to do in order to stay in the air." I watched in relief as he walked over by the door to grab the discarded pie bag and spilt coffee cup. Coffee had leaked out and made little tree root designs along the floor. I felt bad about that but he started it. Standing up he looked at me where I was perched. The dig on my wings stung, they weren't the pretty ethereal white of an Angels but resembled melted cookies and cream ice cream.
