He gawked at his father as if he was seeing him for the very first time as all the puzzle pieces began to fall into place.
"You're sick," he whispered, scrambling to his feet. "What is it? Is it curable? What did the doctors say?"
Nikolai turned ashen at the questions, his face as white as a sheet of paper. But as quickly as the mask had dropped, exposing his vulnerability, he slotted it back in place. And once again, he looked like the man Andrei had always known. Cold. Scheming. Power hungry.
The trouble with masks, though, is that once they fall off, no matter how briefly, one can never unsee the ugliness they're meant to conceal.
