She lifted it slowly and carefully and pressed a trembling kiss to his knuckles. The door clicked softly behind her, and Connie walked in. Even from the doorway, she radiated fury. Her eyes flicked to Jace, motionless on the bed, plaster stretched across his face, an IV drip humming beside him. “They should’ve let him die.” Connie thought bitterly, standing rigid with her arms crossed. She didn’t say it out loud, but her silence carried the same weight. She thought of the phone call hours earlier. Sky’s voice, broken, terrified, sobbing. The image of her best friend crumpled on the floor of her apartment flashed through her mind. Blood streaks her legs. Her arms were slashed open.
