Senika said at last, his voice quieter now… but far more dangerous. “She is still coming.” A slow, cold dread pooled in the pit of the cloaked figure’s stomach. Behind him, the moonstone flickered. “Even weakened,” Senika continued, gazing out over the dead lands, “the Crescent warriors continue to present the biggest threat in this war.” His fingers curled slightly against the balcony rail. “My men have created lore. Rumors.” A faint, cruel smile touched his cracked lips. “Stories that they have been given… special powers.”

Maybe it was recognition. Slowly, she reached for the book again. This time, Orion didn’t. He watched. Her fingers rested against the worn cover, the broken crescent cool beneath her skin. For a moment—Nothing. Then, the symbol shifted. Not physically. Not visibly enough to anyone else. But Selene felt it. Like a lock… turning. The book opened. On its own. Orion stilled beside her. “…You didn’t do that,” he said. Selene didn’t answer. Because she hadn’t. The pages inside weren’t filled with normal writing. At first glance—nothing. Blank. Empty. I whispered. But Arnold continued mercilessly. “I, Alpha Arnold Reid of the Nightshade Pack…” My vision blurred. “…reject you, Leticia Hales of Frostfall Pack…” The mate bond snapped through my chest like something tearing apart inside me. “…as my Luna.”

After several losses of their lands, properties, and pack members, they had to give in to one another for peace to reign. But the peace didn’t last long enough. The Crescent moon pack took advantage of this peace to rebuild, farm, and stay away from others because they had more to lose due to their smaller numbers. The other three packs, Midnighters, Emoon, and the Crossers, lived in sophistication, wealth, and riches, growing more arrogant. They teamed up together, led by the Midnighters pack, to attack the Crescents because of their lands and natural resources. The Crescents pack were the most strategic warriors, despite their small numbers, led by their warlord Alpha Heartfield.

She felt the wards woven there—thin, weak, straining to hold. She pressed harder. A soft crackle of energy sputtered under her paw, like dying embers. She smiled, Soon. --- Inside Crescent Vale, the village lay quiet. Wolves in human form walked the borders with torches, their eyes flashing with unease. But first, we had to survive the night. I leaned my head against the window, watching the moon rise higher in the sky—full and bright and beautiful. A blood moon, I realized. How fitting.
