The realization irritated me more than it should have.
I closed the book with a soft thud and stared at the shelves. Power lived here, too—ink and paper shaping minds, just as bullets shaped bodies. I wondered how many of these books he’d actually read. How many nights he’d spent in this room, alone, building himself into whatever he was now.
A shadow crossed the doorway.
I didn’t look up immediately. Pride kept my chin lifted, my expression neutral.
