Reid's body had stopped feeling the cold around the ninety-minute mark. That was when the shivering stopped and something worse took its place—a numbness that spread from his fingers up his arms, from his knees up his thighs. His skin was pale and wrinkled, pruned by the endless water. His hair clung to his forehead. His eyes burned. But his mind was clear. Clearer than it had been in years. He thought about the first time he saw Jacintha. Not the wedding—he barely remembered the wedding. The first time. A garden party. She had been laughing at something someone said, head thrown back, sunlight catching the edges of her hair. He had thought, She'll do.

He holds his head with his hands, shuts his eyes, and he says, “That did not happen. It is just a thought they are putting in my mind to control me.” He shakes his head repeatedly as if trying to shake the thing he saw from his mind. Why do they need him? What do the savages want from him? He holds his head when he feels it pounding. How was he supposed to find out the truth? He looks at the ground, and at the sky, and can’t help feeling defeated. Back in the strategy hall, Malisha leans back into her chair. “If this is some old ritual or promise or whatever, then why now?”

Better to be rejected than murdered in my opinion even though I did hear rumors here and there than being rejected was sometimes even worse than death in itself. The rejection supposedly left your soul empty and there was no happiness left in you. In time you turn into a vicious beast that cares for nothing and no one. That was not the best option either, but I was adamant to believe that those rumors were just that. Rumors. You know what they say, you tell yourself anything just to make an excuse for your actions or something like that.

Xander tried to walk past her, but the nurse blocked his way, “Sir, please. The patient needs some rest." “I won’t disturb her. I will only see her once and get out without bothering her.” Xander walked past her, but the nurse again tried to block him. This time, Riley intervened, “Let him go. It will not take much time.” The nurse watched Xander enter the ward helplessly. She sighed and shook her head, "You don't understand." She looked back at Riley and explained, “She is mentally ill. But those monsters haven't stopped raping her. She is scared, and Mr. Reid’s presence would only stimulate her. I don’t know how will she react.”

My heartrate quickened as I gasped in excitement, “So are you here to bring me home—” He cut my off sharply, “Buying you off is the last thing I will ever do for you, Regina.” “Dorian…” “You tried to murder Alpha Gray!” he gritted, “If I knew you were this evil, I wouldn’t let you come near him ever!” “I DIDN’T!!!” I cried, tears welling up in my eyes. “I didn't kill Gray! Wake up, Dorian! If I did kill him, would I be tie up here and sold like a livestock? It was a setup!”

I close my eyes and fall into a variation of my usual nightmare. It’s quiet, too quiet. The only sounds are the soft patters of mouse paws skirting across wooden floorboards. I’m in the old slave holding cell from my childhood but I am, as I am now, an adult. I’m in my assassin outfit. There are slaves all around me, but they are frozen in time. Their mouths are agape as if they are afraid and their eyes are empty as if they’ve lost the will to live. Their forms are distorted into odd postures, some with their legs bent over their heads or an arm bent backwards against the joint and up. They don’t have hair or distinguishable faces, and they all wear the same rags I remember from my childhoo

She said as she pressed the password to her door. "Don't lie to me Ida, am your aunt, an..." Before Victoria could complete her word, Ida cut the phone call. Pushing herself into the room, she closed the door behind her, checking her bag for face wipes, but another thing caught her attention 'His card' Staring at it for a while, she took it throwing it into the trash can in the room. I followed Reid and the guards slowly behind until we reached the dungeon and she was flung lifelessly onto the cold, hard floor without regard. Reid walked close to where she'd fallen and used the edge of his boot to roughly raise her head up and then he kicked it with the second boot so that it hung lowly and blood dripped from her heavily bruised lip, and on seeing the blood that dripped Reid chuckled in satisfaction like the sadistic bastard he was. If only the people that adored him could know the kind of lethalness that runs in his blood, they'd never take a second glance at him again.

A sudden, treacherous heat coiled deep in my belly. A reminder of the night before that made me want to whimper. I squeezed my legs shut, my face flushing a deep, humiliated crimson. “Mate,” Mia whispered, her tail wagging so hard in my mind it felt like my ribs were vibrating. “He smells like pine trees and sin.
