Ibu angkatku memiliki kebiasaan yang mengerikan. Dia sangat suka makan plasenta dan hanya menginginkan plasenta dari kerabat dekatnya. Dia percaya bahwa plasenta dapat menyembuhkan segala penyakit, jadi dia mengadopsi banyak gadis untuk dijadikan pelampiasan nafsu bagi putranya. Aku dan kakakku adalah saudara kembar. Namun, tampang kami sama sekali tidak mirip. Kakakku cantik dan pandai, serta sangat populer di panti asuhan. Karena itulah, ibu angkatku langsung terpikat padanya. Aku tidak tahu apa yang dikatakan kakakku pada ibu angkatku waktu itu. Namun pada akhirnya, dia memutuskan untuk mengadopsiku juga. Awalnya, aku berpikir kami akan menjalani kehidupan yang normal bersama. Namun, ilusi itu hanya bertahan selama satu tahun. Kenyataan baru mulai terbuka suatu malam ketika aku terbangun untuk pergi ke kamar mandi dan mendengar suara erangan dari kamar kakakku. Dengan jelas, aku melihat bayangan Donny, putra ibu angkatku, melakukan hal yang membuatku merinding di atas tubuh kakakku. I was once the most respected female intelligence officer in the underworld. I controlled black market trade, port lockdowns, and risk assessments for every smuggling route. These were the basics every new recruit learned on their first day in the Mafia. But my intel was never reliable. As time went by, everyone caught on. In this city, whether the ports were locked down or open for business didn't depend on intel. It depended on whether Vincenzo's childhood friend was in a bad mood. I had just sent an order over the family's secure channel: "Level-one lockdown. All shipping routes are closed." A moment later, the ports were thrown wide open. My rival mocked me in front of everyone. "Isabella's supposed to be the queen of underworld intelligence, isn't she? What happened, did she lose her touch?" Other family members twisted the knife without a second thought. "Her husband changes the rules at a word from his precious Amelia. Who's going to listen to her anymore?" "She's on the hook for any losses from this. That route reopening is going to bankrupt her!" I clutched a stack of formal censures from the family. I said nothing. It didn't matter. I was done being a pawn in their games. Soon, I would be gone for good.

In my previous cycle, when I graduated from university, my cousin Laura gave me a gramophone. But after I received the gramophone, accidents kept befalling my family. In the end, even my boyfriend betrayed me to be with her. It was only then that I learned that all of this was my cousin’s scheme. After I got to the current cycle, I pretended to accept my cousin’s present but never used the gramophone. It led to the curse delivering such a vicious backlash to my cousin and her entire family that they died.

At our wedding ceremony, the four-year-old nephew of my fiance, Michael Thompson, suddenly rushes onto the stage. He grabs his uncle's hand and cries, "Daddy, why are you marrying another woman? Don't you want me and Mommy anymore?" Seeing this, Lisa Jenner quickly runs over to intervene. She sounds apologetic, but her words are slightly provocative. "I'm so sorry, Sarah. Danny lost his father when he was little and has always seen Michael as his dad. He didn't mean to cause trouble." Even Michael remains completely calm as he picks up Danny. He explains to me, "Before David passed away, he made me promise to take care of his widow and child. I only let Danny call me 'Daddy' so he could have a normal childhood. You understand, right?" As I look at the three of them, standing there like the perfect family, I laugh coldly and rip off my veil. "This poor child has been through so much. How could I possibly steal his dad away? "You know what? Why don't I just let Lisa take my place up here? Then you can have your happy little family of three."

Terus ... kalau orang tuamu datang, kita mau menyambut seperti ratu, menyediakan ikan, daging, udang, cumi, begitu? Kita hidup harus hemat. Nggak peduli siapa yang datang. Bukankah orang kampung juga menyambut tamu dengan hidangan seadanya?"
