I twisted the wedding ring on my left hand and calmly watched Victor walk down from the stage, step by step toward me. When he reached me, he knelt on one knee and held up the ring. "Marry me, Claire." I sneered and swatted his hand away, showing the diamond ring on my ring finger. "Mr. Whitmore, please show some respect. I'm a married woman." His pupils dilated in shock, but the next second they suddenly lit up as he said excitedly, "Claire, you're still jealous of Emma, so you're making up this excuse to brush me off, right?

I used the moment to break free and lunged for the hearth. I grabbed the necklace with my bare hand. The fire scorched the back of my hand, but I felt nothing. I crushed the necklace against my chest and smothered the flames with my body. Luckily, only a small part of it was blackened. I collapsed to the floor, curled around what I was protecting. My hair was a mess, my clothes torn, the back of my hand burned black. Slowly, I lifted my head. Leo had been about to kick me, but the look in my eyes made him freeze in place.
