My Step-Brothers’ Forbidden Addiction
I was reaching for a bunch of carrots, trying to convince myself that the worst was over and I could just finish shopping and leave, when I heard them.
“Hey! Pretty lady!”
I turned to see a group of kids approaching me. Four or five of them, ranging from maybe eight to twelve years old. They were smiling, their faces open and friendly.
“Hi,” I said cautiously, wondering if they had the wrong person.
“Do you want to play with us?” the oldest girl asked. She had pigtails and was missing one of her front teeth. “We’re playing tag.”
“Oh, that’s sweet, but I’m actually in a hurry,” I said gently. “Maybe another time?”
