Sleep would most definitely be eluding me tonight. But I didn’t particularly care. My big vice was romance novels. I just loved them. And the cheesier and sappier and more unrealistic they got, the more I invested myself in them because, by that point, it was pretty much only the emotions they seemed to evoke that mattered. They were just so yummy and fulfilling and...and amazing. I devoured them like potato chips, damning any sleepless-night consequences that might follow. So basically, I was pretty much determined to finish this entire book tonight.

“I want you.” Roman chuckled, cupping my face as he kissed me softly. “If we’re going to have sex, I’m sleeping over. I don’t want to fuck you and leave after, amor.” I can’t even guillotine the hope that flowered in my chest anymore. Biting my lip, I wrapped my arms around his shoulder. “I’d like that.” Roman’s gaze softened as he kissed the tip of my nose, a gesture that was far too intimate. This is dangerous territory. Why is he doing all the right things? At this rate, I might fall without the safety of a parachute, or the deep waters of the ocean to catch me down below if I crash too hard.

I’m talking absolutely shameless books with shirtless men on the covers, morally questionable billionaires, ridiculous amounts of tension, and enough spice to qualify as attempted arson. The kind Kenneth used to wrinkle his nose at. “Those books rot your brain, Jo.” Funny. I don’t think the books were the problem. I’ve also rediscovered cheesy rom-coms and psychological thrillers, all the goodies that Kenneth never agreed to watch with me because they were “too stupid” (the romcoms) and “too complicated” (the psych thrillers).

I squashed that dangerous little softness in my chest as fast as closing a misclicked app. No. This isn’t right. A proper lover knows when to let go and when to walk away. Not get all sentimental after just a couple rounds and start imagining this “cozy domestic life” script. That’s not romance—that’s asking for trouble. Julian was undeniably charming—so charming it blurred your boundaries. And that was exactly why he was dangerous. Like a top-shelf liquor, smooth on the way down but with a kick that sneaks up on you—you take a sip and before you know it, you’re tipsy.

We’ve all read them right? Those sappy romance novels, the ones where some handsome stranger rescues the damsel in distress. He’s wealthy like no other and adores the ground she walks on. There’s some life altering event, a struggle of some kind but it gets resolved and they live happily ever after.

It is a dark romance with degradation, BDSM that doesn’t contain consent within the dynamic (I know, not something I typically have in my book). There are many instances where consent is very dubious and there is kidnapping. Because what fun is writing dark romance without hitting those tropes? I will add to anyone worried, this one does have a HEA because I’m a sucker for that happily ever after and I couldn’t imagine not giving Cass her happy ending.

“No. That you read books like these.” At that, my hackles rose. I had a bit of a love-hate relationship with romance novels. Sometimes they could be so amazing that my mind was blown. But when they were bad, well, they were bad. Since I’d been reading them for many years now, I felt like I could criticize them fairly. But when someone—especially a man—talked derisively about romance novels, I always got defensive. I could call them trash, but nobody else could. “Do you want me to hit you upside the head again?” I held up the book. “Because I will if you keep going with that subject.”
