Only twice have we gotten personal: one being my shit-ass-drunk confession about my sister-in-law, the other was when Danny broke up with Dick-face. I’ve only ever seen Danny with one guy and that was last summer. He was a dick-face—professional-shirted dick-face with long sleeves and a tie even in the heat. Dressing down for him was taking off his suit jacket and leaving it in his car. The car was another problem, a sissy-assed Prius. I didn’t like him. Liked him even less when I found out he was a defense attorney. Not that Danny told me this. I saw his ad on television in the middle of a baseball game, with his big white teeth offering to help you with your DUI or personal injury case. Ye

I think it was only Raven who could take his brute strength. And, that was saying something considering Danny had gotten stronger in the last couple of years. At his tender age of 24, Danny was already very big, his tanned physique was very muscular. His blonde hair, that used to flop into his eyes, was now brushed back. He wore a white collared shirt and I could see his muscles bulging through it. Danny worked as a personal trainer and the job matched his passions completely.

It seems the kid had learned some caution, at least. “Boss?” Danny’s voice was young, and uncertain. “You wanted to see me?” I turned slowly, letting him sweat for a moment. He was twenty, maybe twenty-one. Scrawny. And very nervous. This was the kid who’d let Rylan escape a week ago. “Come here,” I said. Danny approached like he was walking to the gallows. His hands were shaking. I let the silence stretch, watching him squirm. Then I smiled. “Good work.”

His voice was terrifyingly level, devoid of the tremor that usually defined him. Ote’s face drained of colour. The cigarette fell from his lips, hissing as it hit a puddle. “What… what recording?” “The one in my office,” Danny said, stepping closer. “The one where you laughed about my father’s brakes. The one where you bragged about the f*e you got for turning a café into a slaughterhouse. You sat across from me in that precinct, pretending to be the hero and painting me as some kind of homicidal maniac, while you had my parents’ blood under your fingernails.”

She watched as Jake took out a photo from his bag and passed it to her. Her brows furrowed immediately. It was a picture of a guy, he looked like he was in his early twenties. He looked way too familiar but she couldn’t remember where she had seen him before. “Who’s he?” She questioned. “It’s unfortunate you don’t recognize him.” Kira clicked her tongue. “He’s Danny.” Rebecca’s jaw dropped. “Danny? Oh my God! Where is he now? Did anything happen to him?” Kira smirked. “Not yet.”

Seth called out as Alex walked over to stand beside him. Alex looked over at Danny, who was leaning against the passenger side door of the F-250. He was wearing a Mossy Oak camo hat and a black tank top. Perhaps a bit too light for April, but he never cared. In fact, it was the sort of outfit he seemed to wear all year round. “Where’ve you been today?” Alex asked Danny. Danny just rested himself against the truck door casually with his hands hanging in his pockets. There was no way he had been sick earlier. “Oh you know,” he began with a grin. “Couldn’t afford to come to school today.”

"Right, Fair enough." He turned the laptop toward me. "Julian, right? You didn't tell me he was your boss's brother.” My eyes went to the screen. “I knew you'd find that out yourself.” I heard him hum, “Right, well…You told me he was a doctor. Lucious thinks he's a doctor." "He is." "He isn't," Danny said, his voice thankfully clipped and focused. "I spent the last six days digging into his background” “And?” Danny leaned back, “Well for one he's in Switzerland. He’s not a medical doctor, he’s a chemist. High-end, synthetic stuff. He’s been operating out of a private lab in Zurich for years."

I cut in, my voice steadier than I felt, “what do you want?” He hesitated. That hesitation told me everything. “I heard things,” he said finally. My stomach dropped. “What things?” He looked uncomfortable now. “About Frank.” Of course. “What about him?” I asked. Danny’s gaze sharpened. “Is he playing you?” I stared at him, disbelief rushing in hot and fast. “Excuse me?” “He’s got a reputation,” Danny said, frustration creeping into his voice. “You know that. He doesn’t do anything serious. He doesn’t stick around.”

And I held him like I’d hold the whole world together if it meant keeping him standing. Because Luca Ricci could be the Don for everyone else. But here with me he was just a man terrified of losing his son. And I would hold him through every second of it.

I groan internally. My name is Mariah Cruz. I'm 17 years old and starting my junior year today. My Father, Mark Cruz, is the current Beta of our pack, The Royal Moon Pack, and my mother, Jennifer Diaz, is the Beta female. My Brother Josh Cruz is 18 years old and a senior in High School. He is training to become the next Beta when our Alpha, Jason Adams, decides to retire and hand the title to his eldest son, Nick Adams. Nick is 18 and is also a senior in high school. He is also my brother's best friend.
