She knew that the rebellion was not without its dangers, and she braced herself for the worst. "What is it?" she asked. "It's Jamie," the rebel said. "No, this can't be true, Jamie is my sister, she would not hurt me" Karen objected.

I found the black Volvo idling in the shadows of the teacher’s parking lot. I opened the passenger door and slid in. "Close it," Dante snapped. I slammed the door. Dante looked different. His chestnut hair was dyed a harsh, ink-black. He was wearing a dark hoodie, his eyes scanning the perimeter with frantic energy. "We have to go," he said, putting the car in gear. "Now." "What happened?" I asked, buckling my seatbelt. "Did the Council reject the appeal?" Dante laughed, a sharp, bitter sound. "Reject it? Gabriella, they didn't just reject it. Your mate just declared war."

“I want you to pretend to be my fiancé. My father wants me to marry Sevro Rinaldi. But I’ll be damned if I let that happen.” Dante didn’t say anything, but his eyes never left me even once. I took that as my sign to continue. “We’ll pretend to be engaged for a year. I just need you to buy me a bit of time. That’s all I need.” Dante leans his weight back on the chair behind him. “And why should I help you?” I inched forward. “Not everybody can say they’re engaged to the Vitale heiress. You’d get the status and every other thing that’ll come with it. I don’t believe I have to tell you what you stand to gain.”
