The books—'A Gathering of Gargoyles', 'The Darkangel', and 'The Pearl of the Soul of the World'—have this lush, poetic fantasy vibe that feels like a darker, more twisted fairytale. I stumbled upon them years ago in a used bookstore, and the cover art alone hooked me.

What’s wild is how underrated they are compared to other 80s fantasy series. The world-building is so vivid, especially the idea of the darkangel himself, this vampiric creature with stolen wives. It’s got that perfect blend of Gothic romance and mythic quest energy. I still think about the ending sometimes—no spoilers, but it lingers like a haunting melody.

Her prose is so vivid—I can still picture the winged protagonist and the eerie, atmospheric landscapes. Navigating the reading order for 'Dark Angel' is tricky because the title gets reused. If you're talking about the urban fantasy series by Lynsay Sands that starts with 'A Quick Bite', the intended order is publication order. That begins with the Argeneau family origin and follows a mostly chronological line through the various couples. Sands does jump around the timeline a bit in later books to explore other characters, but sticking with the release dates avoids most spoilers.

I tried reading one of the later books first because the blurb caught my eye, and it was a mess—I was lost in a sea of inside jokes about characters I'd never met and past events that got casually spoiled. The early books set up the whole vampire world's rules and the central family dynamics. Starting out of sequence really undercuts the payoff when long-running character arcs finally get resolved. The first three books are essential foundation, in my opinion.

There are a couple of novellas and offshoots, but those are best saved for after you're invested in the world. Some fans argue you can read them as standalones, but I think you lose half the charm. The main series order is definitely the way to go for the full effect.
