Not hostile, but something hung in the air, it made my stomach tighten. *** The patient grew worse. His breathing became more ragged. His skin took on a grayish tint, sweat soaked through his tunic. I checked his arm again. The discoloration had spread, black veins now crawled up his forearm, pulsing faintly beneath the skin. I had never seen anything like it. "Everyone stop." The room went quiet. Elara came closer, she bent down beside me, her eyes narrowing. "What is that?" "I don't know." Maelis stepped forward. She looked at the veins, the pulsing darkness, the way the skin around them had begun to wither.

VIVIENNE pov I stared at the mirror like it owed me money. Naked. Full-frontal and no mercy. The black veins had retreated to thin, ugly spiderwebs under my skin, mostly arms, thighs, ribs, a nasty crown creeping up my throat like some gothic tattoo gone wrong.

He pressed the glass harder. “It’s not a vein, it’s an artery… the carotid.”

A lethal fever of the blood. Malakai let out a low, aristocratic chuckle, leaning his head back against the armored bulkhead. "Go ahead. Kill me. Then watch my brother's organs liquefy in the next twenty minutes. You think you’re a survivor, Elena, but you’re just a blind weapon. Look at his neck." My gaze snapped down to Dominic’s throat. The purple veins weren't just pulsing—they were expanding, spreading like a dark mold toward his carotid artery.

When I turned away, I looked up at Elijah, who was looking at me with great concern . "Is everything okay?" I asked, my brows drawn. He wasn't looking into my eyes, or even at my lips. But on my skin. "Ky…" he whispered, and reached for my hand, "your.. Your arms." I looked down and had to bite back a scream. "What the hell?" I muttered as I stared at my arm. Black thin veins, webbed across my skin like cracks of ink. They ran up my forearms, curling over the back of my hands, disappearing under my sleeves and reappearing at my collarbone.

What had once been a faint discoloration had deepened into something unmistakable. A crescent curved along the side of my neck just below my jaw, its edges soft and blurred like a bruise blooming beneath the skin. The color settled into shades of deep indigo and muted violet, darker toward the outer arc, where the shape sharpened into faint, clawed ridges. The curve looked almost like a storm-wind sweeping across my throat. At the center of the crescent, a narrow lightning vein cut downward. It was thin, jagged, pale silver against the darker tones surrounding it. Not bright enough to glow, but bright enough that the shape stood out sharply if someone looked closely.

Black spots danced in and out like they were testing how far they could go before I dropped. I waited it out, counting sheeps slowly in my head until the spinning eased enough for me to stand. Each step toward the mirror felt heavier than it should have. And when I finally looked? I went completely still. The veins had changed though they appear faint and one will miss if you weren’t looking for them. But they were darker now and it wasn’t just around the mark. They’d spread slightly witj thin lines branching just beneath the skin creeping downward toward my chest like cracks in glass.

The symptoms were exactly as Hazel had described them. All seven of them were unconsciousness, sweating and had black veins under their skin. What confused her though, was the location and spreading of the veins. Six people only had few black veins in the abdominal area, while the seventh… it was hard to find places were he hadn't any. Not that she'd seen their whole bodies herself, but the doctor, an old man with glasses, had described it to her and he had taken off the seventh man shirt to let her see.

Weak, and defeated. I sat down on one of the six chairs in the throne room, and relaxed on the backrest. “What is the nature of their wounds?” I asked, while contemplating his report. “Claw marks, obviously another vampire's. The blood from the wound is also unusual.” He explained. I looked up at him. “How unusual?” “Dark, and almost bluish. Almost like an attack from a-” “Rogue.” I finished off for him, in a voice cold enough to freeze an ocean.

All I could see was her. She was a wreck. Blood crusted under her nose. A long gash torn down her side where the beast’s claws had caught her. Her face was gray and sunken, her lips cracked. And her arm… I pulled back her torn sleeve and my heart stopped. The black veins. I’d heard about them. I’d seen them on the dying at the gates. But I’d never seen them on her, and the sight of them tore something open in me. They’d spread far past her wrist, past her elbow, climbing up over her shoulder, dark and thick and pulsing faintly under her skin like something alive.
