The symptoms were exactly as Hazel had described them. All seven of them were unconsciousness, sweating and had black veins under their skin. What confused her though, was the location and spreading of the veins. Six people only had few black veins in the abdominal area, while the seventh… it was hard to find places were he hadn't any. Not that she'd seen their whole bodies herself, but the doctor, an old man with glasses, had described it to her and he had taken off the seventh man shirt to let her see.

Weak, and defeated. I sat down on one of the six chairs in the throne room, and relaxed on the backrest. “What is the nature of their wounds?” I asked, while contemplating his report. “Claw marks, obviously another vampire's. The blood from the wound is also unusual.” He explained. I looked up at him. “How unusual?” “Dark, and almost bluish. Almost like an attack from a-” “Rogue.” I finished off for him, in a voice cold enough to freeze an ocean.

All I could see was her. She was a wreck. Blood crusted under her nose. A long gash torn down her side where the beast’s claws had caught her. Her face was gray and sunken, her lips cracked. And her arm… I pulled back her torn sleeve and my heart stopped. The black veins. I’d heard about them. I’d seen them on the dying at the gates. But I’d never seen them on her, and the sight of them tore something open in me. They’d spread far past her wrist, past her elbow, climbing up over her shoulder, dark and thick and pulsing faintly under her skin like something alive.

I just sat there, silently begging him to wake up, to say something, to be okay. As the quiet stretched on, something caught my attention. A mark on his neck. It looked strange, something I’d never seen before. I stood up and leaned closer to get a better look. There were black lines on the side of his neck. They were faint but slowly spreading, curling across his skin in a way that looked deeply unnatural. I hesitated, then gently turned his body to the side. My heart dropped immediately. His entire back was marked with the same dark veins, stretching out in all directions like some kind of infection. It looked as if something was moving beneath his skin, something that did not belong there

The band clattered into the stone bowl with a sound that made her stomach turn. What lay beneath made her want to cover her arm again on instinct. The skin over her wrist and forearm wasn’t smooth. Silver lines veined up from her palm in thick, branching paths, bright under the surface like molten metal caught just before bursting free. At some points, the flesh between those veins looked thin, like over‑stretched glass. Lysa hissed softly. “That’s… worse than I thought,” she murmured. “Seal’s not just cracked. It’s… filleted.”

I noticed something by the side of his neck and I touched his chin but turned his head to the side, exposing his neck to me. "These are," I trailed off. There were red dots on his neck and they looked like bruises from a pinch but what got my attention more was that the veins that were visible had a strange colour. "What is he doing to you?" I whispered, feeling a twinge of guilt in my chest without realising it. I let go of him when I saw he was watching me closely. "Is this you being concerned or you being curious?" He wondered. "Come on, Harlan. We are on the same team. If something is wrong with you, I need to know. Is it drugs? Some kind of medical condition?" Kane let out a short laugh with no humor in it. "Not drugs. Not a condition. Just leave me alone." "You almost shifted or something on the ice," Elias pressed, voice low. "I saw claws starting to come out. Do not tell me that was nothing." And my tongue turns into a five-ton rock inside of my mouth as my eyes meet his. His eyes, which had been completely dark brown earlier, are tinged with a sickly hue of blue. His cheeks are the color of dead ash. I see the veins underneath, paths of thick blue twisting across his skin. Holy shit. “Don’t look at me like that.”

I need to understand what he’s seeing. When I look at myself in the reflection, the blood drains from my face. My veins — they’ve turned black. Not bruised. Not purple. Jet black. The darkness is spreading slowly, like roots of a dead tree branching out under my skin. It makes no sense. I don’t understand what I’m seeing. My throat goes dry, and I can barely swallow. “What is happening to me?” I yell at him, my voice breaking through the tense silence like a desperate plea. It’s as if by shouting, I could force some kind of answer out of him — some explanation to make sense of this nightmare unfolding inside me.

Suddenly, there was a series of bangs. Sean was thumping wildly on the ground in the underground basement. The strong poison was making the blood vessels in his body twist together like pretzels. His blood was ricocheting and boiling, making all the veins on his body bulge. He turned a bright red all over, and some parts of his body were even a dark purple! It was a sign of an imminent blood vessel explosion! "Aargh!" Sean opened his mouth wide and growled in pain, but he could not make a sound. It felt as if there was a fish bone stuck in his throat.
