I suddenly felt rather possessive of him, I wasn’t lost on the way women looked at him, or at Derek for that matter. We got their building and said our good nights, with Heath taking my suitcases. We got into his place and even though he’d shown it to me on video chat, I had to laugh. “Yeah this place needs a woman’s touch all right, there’s no color, nothing pretty! You need some light blues or some yellows in here. Seriously like who picked brown curtains, damn.” He laughed, “I did, little Miss! Only Derek or some of our crew come here, well really they’re mostly at Derek’s. Nobody comes here,” he said, kissing my neck.

The air thickened, silence ensued for a few seconds. "Observations can be misleading." I said simply. Why did I actually surround myself with darkness? Once, my room burst with vibrant colors – sunshine yellow, sky blue, and pink. But that was before. Before the pain. Before the loss. Before the emptiness. Dark colors were safer. They didn't remind me of happiness. Didn't mock me with joy. Didn't taunt me with what I'd lost. Gray was neutral. Black was numb. They didn't feel anything. First, I had it because I didn't want to be reminded of happiness but then I started loving it. These colors were so rebellious – uncaring. It was perfect.

Chapter 1: Dysfunctional family. The darkness is nothing more than a test that God gives us, many times to overcome things and learn from it, but in the end we all carry that darkness in our hearts, we just have to decide whether to expel it or let it dwell within you. Charlotte is a girl who has been in the dark since she was born, her parents were shitty to her, she was beaten and mistreated unjustifiably simply because her parents wanted it that way, but to understand a little of this story we must return to the past.

DAMIAN She is right there in the darkness when I close my eyes, crying, waiting on me in that silk nightdress. What was a head full of curls is now matted with grease and decline. Like the previous, I dash into our bedroom and skid to a halt when she turns away from the window. The stream of moonlight casts a deathly glow on her pale skin marred by self-inflicted bruises. She takes measured steps towards me, muttering her discomfort about having to wait for hours to see me.

A mix of fear, anger, and relief. The truth hurt. But the lies had hurt worse. Deep down, I just wanted everything to go back to normal. AT FRANCESCA’S PENTHOUSE The penthouse lights were low, warm, and expensive. Francesca sat on the edge of the long white couch, legs crossed, lips painted deep red. She held a glass of wine like it was a weapon. She watched Mr. Blackwood with a smirk. Mr. Black stood near the window, back to her, hands in his pockets. His shoulders were tense.

The soft, pastel-colored dresses Lily used to wear? Gone. She pulled out the sleek black dress from the back. Something bold. Something dangerous. She slipped into it easily.

The interface. The particular dark-background layout, the specific icon arrangement, the visual signature of an application that didn't exist on any standard app store and that most people would never encounter in their lives and that Ravyn would recognize at a distance of twenty feet in a dark room because she'd been navigating it for three years. And beneath the application, just visible for that fraction of a second before the angle changed—a small icon. Circular. Deep red, the color of arterial blood or old brick, with a stylized bird in the center.

“Choose the black one. She’s a badass baby.” “But, I like the pink one.” “No, the baby loves black, remember dark colors? They love that.” Matias said, nodding his head. “Your High—” “Stop right there, Damian.” Then, signaling Damian to shut his mouth, my attention was still on Matias. “What do you mean the baby loves the dark colors? Where did you get that information?” “Remember? When the baby cries at night, which is, by the way, it’s a fact. Your world will become dark. So, yeah, babies love dark colors, and they will paint your life dark—”

It was a similar design to the one we had in Damian's office back at Stone Enterprises. Our room, however, was the biggest contradiction compared to the decoration for the rest of the suite. I've never been your traditional girly girl, so I tend to favour dark tones compared to light ones. Our bedroom had a much darker theme to it. Our room was both simple and elegant, but provided a more of a manly vibe to it. Black was the primary colour used, but not to the point that it appeared to venture onto goth territory. Rather it made the room look sleek and sophisticated.
