A massive wolf, it was as black as midnight, eyes glowing silver. Serena’s heart swelled with twisted pride. “Silver,” she whispered, her voice steady and cold. “Show none of them mercy.” She didn’t need to say it twice. Silver never intended to let a single one of them leave alive.

“Mommy?” Hazel’s voice echoed from everywhere and nowhere. Haley spun, heart pounding. “Hazel? Ryder?” The forest answered with silence. Then eyes opened in the dark. Silver. Dozens of them. Watching. Waiting. She backed away, breath coming sharp and shallow, until her shoulders hit something solid. She turned— Adam stood there, but wrong. His eyes were hollow, his chest split open like something had ripped him apart from the inside. Black smoke poured from the wound instead of blood.

POV: Ash Ryder "Get out of my way, you mindless filth, or I’ll paint this ice with whatever rot you have for blood!" Ash’s voice was no longer the steady, commanding baritone of the Silverfang Alpha. It was a jagged, raw snarl that vibrated with a terrifying lack of restraint. He lunged forward, his silver dagger flashing in a lethal arc as it sank into the neck of a Shadow-beast. The creature, a twisted mass of smoke and elongated bone, didn't even have time to hiss before Ash ripped the blade sideways, decapitating it with a spray of violet ichor that sizzled against the frozen ground.

A dull blue glow began to emit from the tiny silver dagger as Hendricks continued to chant. The moment the black mist broke through the barrier, it plunged straight into Hendricks’ eyes, nostrils, ears and mouth. Hendricks was consumed by an onslaught of pain and a bottomless pit of misery, but he could not scream. The black mist began eating away Hendricks’ soul, disintegrating every single memory he had of his times with his son but just as the black mist was about to devour the last bit of Hendricks’ consciousness, the old man plunged the dagger into his chest. In an instant, both man and mist exploded in a flash of blinding blue light.
