Kael's POV I stepped out of the lab and walked along the hallway, my mind still spinning from everything Vex had shown me. The crystal sat in its containment box, glowing faintly, while behind the reinforced glass of another chamber, the virus pulsed and writhed like something alive. Vex had explained the molecular similarities, the way the crystal's energy could theoretically neutralize the virus if properly processed. But theoretically was not good enough. Not when my father was lying in a bed, waiting to die.

Instead, he said quietly, “That man today he wasn’t Vesper muscle. He was a messenger.” “For who?” “For the ones who don’t miss,” Dante replied. “And they don’t warn unless they want something.” Isabelle wrapped her arms around herself, cold settling deep in her bones. “What do they want from me?” Dante stepped closer. “Control,” he said. “If they break you, they break me.” “And if they kill me?” His expression flickered something dark and dangerous slipping through. “Then I burn the world down.” The honesty of it terrified her.

We pulled away slowly, leaving her there in the dust. She shrank in the rearview mirror, finally collapsing on the pavement, like some broken toy left behind. I did not feel a thing. She chose her road, and I set the final scene. She wanted to play traitor; she had to be ready for the fallout. Seth? His time in the clink was anything but a cakewalk. He took a step closer and the man raised his gun back up at me to defend himself. “It's either her,” the man nodded his head towards Hyene still lying, bleeding on the floor, “or her.” His hands moved the gun slightly up and down in a signal of pointing. “You pick, Shape Shifter.” Nathan's gun went off and the man staggered back, clutching his leg in agony. Blood oozed from the gunshot wound and the Spirit started going crazy again, shifting his vision from me to the blood pouring onto the cement. “How about neither?” Nathan said and walked over to help Hyene.

“I think her words were something along the lines of, ‘You’re splitting the resources of your family. If you would just stop fighting with them and join forces, you could take over the entire world.’” Okay, it’s incredibly nerdy and probably a terrible metaphor, but I thought of Darth Vader reaching out to Luke and saying, Join me… with our combined strength, we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to the galaxy. After, of course, Vader had cut off Luke’s hand. Huh… maybe not such a bad metaphor after all. (If you ignore the whole thing about Vader being Luke’s father, that is.) “What did you say?”
