I tossed my phone aside, turned over, and went back to sleep. The next morning, we had barely left the driveway when Molly suddenly cried out beside me. “Oh no, I forgot my admission ticket.” “Dad, pull over! I need to go back and get it.”

I am halfway down the corridor when the lights go out. The sconce at the far end dies first, a sharp pop and a shower of sparks that rain down onto the flagstones like a tiny, brief snowfall. The one behind me follows half a second later. The darkness that drops is not the gradual dark of evening but the absolute black of a house whose wiring has just surrendered to the storm. I stop walking. My hand finds the wall to my right, the stone rough and cool under my palm, and I wait for my eyes to adjust.

"Come with me." Too exhausted to argue, we followed her deeper into the forest, away from the horrors of the Hollow. Little did we know, our journey was far from over. Hayley lifted her saber. Four more. "Ugh… Ugh!" Someone on the floor twitched. Muscles spasmed violently as the half-torn body arched. The abdomen was ripped open, organs spilling. Cloudy gray eyes snapped open. "Raarh!" The freshly turned zombie lunged at Hayley. Slash! Six hundred and one. Level Five didn't have many people to begin with.

It hissed, ready to leap. And then the door to the room opened and one of the night nurses slammed on the lights. It was blinding. After a few moments Robby’s eyes adjusted to the glare. It was just he and the man named Mykel there in the death room. The uglies may have vanished, but they had left him feeling burnt, broken. Spent. ***

Dead people don’t… I touched my chest… ba‑dump, ba‑dump… it was there—my heartbeat. So… why is my heart beating like a trapped rabbit if I’m dead? And if I was not, then what was this place?
