he gestured to the creature, “is the beginning of our salvation.” As the creature pulsated, the tubes quivered violently, and the woman’s body began to convulse. Her moans turned into a strained, echoing cry that reverberated through the chamber. Blackened plants sprouted from the creature, twisting and writhing unnaturally as they bore discolored fruit. The woman’s life force visibly drained until a steady flow of ether stabilized her, leaving her shivering but alive.

Dad grabbed the nurse, throwing her out of the room alongside himself. "Well-done, Emily, you have accomplished your mission." A sinister scent emerged, a wicked laugh echoing across the room. The once blue sky was now a mixture of black and white with the moon reflecting its radiant image. Wails filled the air as a ray of light fell from the sky, hitting a mountain on the other side of town. I groaned, wincing as my hand was scorched by the flaming book. The pages settled, words in red appearing on the pages. "Strigoi, Nosferatu, Jiangshi…"

When he sat back down, he switched on the desk lamp and blew out the candles. “I found something very interesting,” he said, picking up a thick leather-bound manuscript from the far corner of his desk. “In here.” He opened the book and thumbed through the pages. “This is one of the most comprehensive volumes about vampires I've ever found. It has a large chapter on grafhym.” Leesa watched him anxiously, wondering what he had found that concerned her mom. They had already decided her mom might actually have encountered a one-fanged vampire—perhaps Professor Clerval had discovered something that proved it. But what she heard next was even better.

“Look. This stone – it allows them to go out in the sun. If that’s true, then anyone could be a suspect. If they can eat, and drink, and go out in the day – how are we meant to distinguish good from evil, to tell apart human from vampire?” I swallowed thickly, tremors running down my arms and prickling my skin into goose bumps. Behind me, Paps put down his paper, the pages rustling. They sounded too loud, louder than they were; my head ached, each thought dredging from the bottom of my brain up through layers of sludge. I felt slow, stupid, even as new, terrible ideas flashed before my eyes, each worse than the last. “I’ve never heard of that before,” Dad said, and Paps nodded his agreement.

I struggle in his arms, and he smiles satisfied. His hand touches my neck but quickly recoils upon reaching the chain, as if it hurts him. He snarls at me like a cat about to attack another. I see Dad crawling down the hallway, his body covered in cuts. Dad thrusts one of his hunting knives into the creature's ankle, and I hear its guttural scream. "Cursed worm!" he shouts before throwing me downstairs. I feel my body ache with each step. "How dare you try to hurt me, you insolent worm?"

Melissa's eyes fluttered open, her mind foggy from the intense encounter with Damien. She lay on his bed, surrounded by the opulent decor of his chambers. The memories of their passionate night still lingered, making her skin prickle with goosebumps. As she sat up, a faint noise caught her attention. It sounded like whispers, but they were too soft to decipher. She swung her legs over the side of the bed, her feet dangling in the air. The whispers grew louder, and she recognized the voices – they were the pack members, discussing something in hushed tones.

The magic surged—crackling, searing the air, wrapping around her heart like a vice. Pain lanced through Veyra's chest, white-hot and sudden. She dropped to her knees with a strangled cry. The threads of the Fifth Bond ignited, visible now—five glowing strands stretching from her chest toward each of her mates. Each thread pulsed with a heartbeat of its own. Then—one flickered. Not broke. Not yet. But it hissed like a warning. The magic recoiled, pulling back into the earth, leaving behind silence and scorched grass.

Jenny widened her eyes, tremblingly spoke, wanting to call out to him. Her lips slightly parted but were swiftly invaded by Frank. As if a parched traveler stumbled upon an oasis. Frank firmly grasped the back of her head, his movements fervent and excited. Irresistible. In the midst of chaos, he suddenly grasped a thread of consciousness. So... Her lips tasted this sweet. In the haze, Frank abruptly felt a sharp pain on his lips. His actions halted. Jenny seized the opportunity to push him away, landing a slap on his face.

She was hoping this was all just a dream. "We are. You wanna here something more unbelievable? You are Mort's fated mate. Disgusting, right? A kid. Wanna hear more? Everyone who lives in the manor are vampires. Even those kids behind you, well, they are not vampires. They are werewolves..." With a grin, Hadid said as he strides forward to her place. Thumb on her lower lip, he lifted Sumire's chin and leaned her closer. In her ears, he whispered.
