The voice cracked through the night like a whip.
Daniel.
He was already running toward us, pistol drawn, the beam of his flashlight slicing through the dark.
The tall figure shoved me hard, sending me stumbling into the hedges, and turned to face him.
But before Daniel could fire, the hooded one threw something small and metallic to the ground—
A blinding flash erupted, white-hot, searing my vision. I dropped to my knees, coughing, ears ringing.
When I blinked through the afterimage, they were gone. Both of them. The gate at the far end of the garden swung lazily in the wind.
