The infected weren’t the only threat anymore. That much had become clear over the past few weeks. There was an address on it and my inquisitive senses wouldn't let me look the other way. I wrote down the address and got ready to get answers. ******** “Is this it?” I asked the cab driver who dropped me by the driveway of an old building. “20th Derum Avenue? This is it,” He answered as he handed me my change. “Are you a tourist or something?” “No,” “Then you should know the building is off limits unless you want some bits of crazy. And it's pretty late for a young girl to be walking around at a time like this,” He said softly, almost as if he didn't want someone else to hear him.

“Magic is real, my dear Esmerelda. So are ghosts and demons. Do not be taken in and dumbed down by those who wish to control you.” Although I was a skeptic when it came to such things, Nora was a true and skittish believer. The mere mention of the fact that demons were real sent her into a frenzy that took a considerable amount of time for us to calm down. “I’m sorry, but I can’t stay in a house that is haunted by demons,” she said with desperation. “I simply can’t.” “I did not say that the house was haunted with demons,” Lance corrected her. “I said that demons were real.”

It's a tiny bookshop, built into what looks like an old alley. A light glows in the front windows, and the area inside is empty. I don't know why, but I feel intensely drawn to it. "Come on." I cross the street without waiting for him. "Come on, where?" Alec jogs to catch up. A swinging sign above the door says "Alley-Bat Books," and the door handle is worn wood. Yanking it open, I embrace the heat that billows out and step into the bookstore. The walls are lined with bookshelves, and the musty smell of paper and ink fills my nose. A chair and small desk sit in one corner, and a few lamps cast a warm glow.

"Hi, Del. Where are you from? I've been looking for you since yesterday. Why did you disappear, huh?" Delmar was silent and just looked at Brisa with a sad look. For eighteen years of friendship, Brisa can read if now Delmar is not in good condition. Even though his best friend didn't say anything. "Wait a moment." Brisa stopped the person who was decorating her nails. Nails that have been colored silver and will now be decorated with small white gems.

"Mrs. Hayden told me something… unsettling about you." Delilah’s brow furrowed, her mind slipping back to that night—Mrs. Hayden, her eyes alight with barely masked horror, thumbing through her black book, as if she’d discovered a dark portal into Delilah’s mind.
