The best part of this damned game, which is presumably the worst about it, is the need to keep an impassive face without revealing the hands you hold. Its like a fucking chess game. But only mentally. You cannot afford to look nervous or excited. A flicker of a nervous gaze or a confident smirk would be the player's downfall faster than he could say quidditch. “Open it.” Nico reached under the console and withdrew a velvet-lined box. The same one that was on the screen. He set it on the table and flicked the clasp. Inside, a single chess piece lay on its side: a knight, carved from onyx. Beside it was a folded slip of card. He slid the card to Nero. Nero opened it with a thumb, eyes flicking once across the line. “‘Check,’” he read aloud, the word drained of surprise, of anything but cold interest. “Cute,” he added, turning the card around to see if there was anything on the back.

Paul said nothing. He had nothing to say. He just stared at Damien like Damien has morphed into something dangerous. Damien turned away from him. He moved slowly across the room to the small table by the window. A chess board sat on top of it, pieces frozen in the middle of a match no one had finished. He stood over it for a moment, looking down at the board. Then he reached out and picked up the king. He turned it over in his fingers once. Twice. He looked at it like he had been thinking about something for a long time.

They were beautiful. Dedrick, a young man named Sam from our own pack, and another contestant named Allen from another pack formed one unit while the remaining trio made up the opposition. The final round commenced, and this time, the arena was quiet and controlled. For what felt like hours, the six men played the enormous game of chess.
