“It’s… speaking to me.”
He glanced at the hearth, then back at me. “The flame?”
“I heard her,” I said, my voice shaking. “A woman. She sounded angry—no, not angry. Sad.”
Damon crossed the room and gently took my hands. “You’re tired. The flame reacts to emotion, remember? Fear can twist it.”
But he didn’t sound fully convinced. His eyes darted to the fire, watching it carefully. For a second, the golden light flickered in his reflection, as if the flame was alive inside both of us.
