“Technically, I know someone who knows how to deal with demons.” I blinked at Spade, still unable to catch up with what he was blabbering about. Sure, Gladia had said she was a demon more than a handful of times, but I always thought it was a figure of speech. Her attitude passed with flying colors for that category, but are demons really walking among us? Werewolves are supernatural creatures—we belong in fantasy books—but demons? They belong in hell, right? “You… you know someone who knows how to deal with demons?”

I thought for a moment before asking my first question, “Demons are supposed to be all bad and scary from what I’ve been taught, why do they appear almost like angels and why are you guys helping me?” He answered carefully, “All demons are either crafted or born different from each other. As a result, some may appear less frightful than others. The ones that are shaped like you or me tend to be more on the civilian side of The Dark World. Every demon has a different purpose: blacksmiths, castle soldiers, hunters, inn keepers….” “Like my job as a knight back home?”

But my mom just smiled. “That’s my girl.” I smiled proudly. “But what is that?” She picked me up and walked over to her bookcase, she pulled out a really old book and opened it. On the page was a man with horns on his head and a long tail. “So, a demon is usually a very strong being. One who will use tricks and magic to punish anyone who makes them angry. Many people are afraid of them, because they are really strong and don’t show mercy to their enemies.”

Drakos, in particular, would be one of the evil souls. If the legend books were not pure jokes, demons, as far as I had read about, was mostly invisible. They were personifications of evilness, rising from the abyss. The only reason they would be interested in meddling with humans was out of bad intentions, feeding on vicious feelings like vengeance, hatreds or cupidity. Though they might be happy to disrupt the world anytime, I could see no reason why they remained here, disguising as supernatural creatures. That didn’t make any sense.

Wonder if I have any powers? *Ember* I run my hand over the books in my workroom searching for a specific one. "Ah ha." I grab a book with a dark crimson cover and gold lettering from the shelf. "Demons and Hell" is written across the cover. I grab some paper, my feather and my ink before I sit down on a chair. I open the book and start reading. "There are three classes of demons known to humankind. The classes are as follows: the lowest level are the Vermin Class followed by the Common Class and lastly are the Royalty Class.

Demons can die? “Okay, okay. But... how do you die?” “If we’re beheaded. Or injured beyond repair.” Duly noted: decapitation equals demon death. Then he started laughing. A loud, deep, devilish cackle that shook my bones. I closed my eyes, bracing for a fireball or something worse.
