I adjusted my bag strap and kept walking, pretending to study the floor. If anyone asked, I would say I was studying architecture, or probably counting the cracks on the floor… or just planning my escape. Exile had never sounded so peaceful. I reached the cafeteria and grabbed the cheapest sandwich on the menu because my account balance and I are not on speaking terms. Then I looked around for a table and immediately regretted it. It's two stories, well kept and amazingly decorated. Derek's family is well off as I might have mentioned before and they subtly show it off. Derek's father runs his own company on the human lands and his mother owns her own boutique and styling salon here in the pack. They weren't always together for the most part due to his father having to live on the human lands for his job, but as he grew up his father stayed home more and only drives out for emergencies. I push the door open and make way for the others to come in. They plop down in the couch and I laugh. Walking back out, I help the guys unload everything.

Derek swallowed hard, guilt and longing tangling inside him. “You helped me through the darkest parts of my life,” she continued, her eyes holding his steadily. “Let me pay that back now. Tell me what’s wrong.” He drew in a long breath. For a moment, he wanted to tell her everything—about Aurelia, about the mate bond he couldn’t claim, about the war inside me. But he couldn’t. Not with her. Not when it wasn’t fair. So he told her the part he could. “There’s a dispute,” Derek said finally. “Over the uncharted lands. Between my pack and… Draven’s.”

Kosi rolls her eyes and rubs her hands, a mad glint in her eyes, “Guess who just came into town?” Amy fixes her with a look and Kosi scoffs. “Derek. He’s back.” Amy gives her another look and scrunches her face up in thoughts… “Derek… Derek… who’s De—” Kosi groans. “Derek Waters? My cousin? The super hot, super dumb, tool of a jock I have for a cousin? Don’t you remember him?” Amy’s face remains blank and Kosi swears, mumbling something about teenagers and their occupied brains. “The one you tripped over at summer camp when we were kids? Ugh! Derek ‘The Daring’ Waters? The one you’ve always wanted to kiss?”

Derek packed up the fish they caught last night, which would serve as provisions for the next stop. With their gear sorted, Derek stood at the cave entrance, backpack on, casting a glance back as if reluctant to leave. Tabitha, ahead, said coldly, "Aren't we going?" Derek snapped back, "Let's go." He knew he'd never forget this place. On the second night, with no shelter in sight, Derek made do with a vine-woven hammock. The two squeezed into a sleeping bag, gazing up at the star-filled sky—an experience entirely new to both.
