’ I blurted out through our mind-link. ‘What? You were the one who was talking about family, didn't you?’ ‘I didn't!’ I immediately denied it because I was sure I didn't say something like that. ‘And you did.’ ‘Are we fighting, Aiden?’ He could be so annoying sometimes. ‘No, we are not.’ “Alpha Ansel, we returned immediately you mind-liked us, what's up? Did you find him?’ “Yes, I did.” I answered but still, looking away from the person I was talking to.

I ask, trying to hide my nervousness. He hesitates before answering, "Yes, that would be me." I nod, feeling like a nervous wreck. Another Alpha mate, great. I take a deep breath and continue, "Right. Well, if you're going to reject me too, can we at least wait until I'm done with the food? I kind of need the money." I try to keep my voice steady, but I can feel my heart beating in my chest as I wait for his response. Because let's get real, there is no possible way this could work, and I don't want it to work. Yea he acts like he wants me now. Alex did the same shit knowing I couldn't feel the mate bond. He wants me but only for what he thinks I can give him with my body.

“Babe, what’s wrong?” Liam asked, sensing her sudden stiffening. “Nothing,” she answered absentmindedly, her mind still engrossed in the message. Who could it be? What did the message mean? Was it meant for her, or did the sender get the wrong number? She had too many questions and few answers. But there was only one way to find out. She typed a response. Who are you, and what do you mean?} The tiny checkmarks below the message turned blue immediately, signaling that the person on the other side had read the message. She waited for the reply bubble to appear, but there was none. Two minutes went by, and there was still no response.

“No one ignores me. I gave you a fucking card, bitch, and no feedback. Who the hell do you think you are” My throat went dry. I replied: I don’t understand what you mean. A smirking emoji — like a laugh without sound — then three words that made the air go thin: I WANT YOU Here, at the address you saw. By 5 p.m.

SOPHIA “Why would you want to see me? You should give me a reason.” I kept staring at my phone, reading Elena’s response over and over again while I stood in my bathroom to brush my teeth. I sighed and rubbed my thumbs over my eyes in distress while thinking hard about to say back to her. Then I decided to fuck it all and type what I had in mind because what was the worse she could do that she hadn't done yet? With that, I replied vaguely, telling her to come if she wanted to know the reason and seven minutes later, there wasn't a response from her.

Without hesitation, I press send: I miss you. The reply comes almost instantly. Less than twenty seconds. I’m on my way. And just like that, the world tilts. My heart is a live wire. Every pulse screams danger, desire, and something I can no longer contain.

The word settles heavily, and I stare at it, because that is something I do not have, or do not remember having, and yet my body reacts like I do, like it is holding onto something my mind lost. I type one more message, slower this time. Does it help… when I'm there? The question feels heavier than it should, more personal and more revealing. There is a long pause before the reply comes, long enough that I almost regret asking. Then…Yes. Just that. One word, but it lands deep.

The reply came back almost instant. I can’t. I’ve tried. Alex stared at those words. Something in his chest pulled tight, something he didn’t want to name, something that felt too warm in the cold emptiness of his apartment. He typed again. What do you want from me? This time the pause felt longer. Alex stood there in the kitchen, the suit hanging on the chair, phone warm in his hand, waiting. When the message finally came, it was longer.

You really didn't have to do this, but thank you. It's totally inadequate, but it's all I've got. I hit send and stare at the screen, waiting to be left on read. It's pathetic how quickly my pulse spikes when the three dots pop up, showing he's typing. Then they vanish. Then they reappear. My stomach twists with every flicker of indecision on his end. Just say something, I think, chewing on my bottom lip. Finally, his reply comes through. 'No thanks needed. There's nothing I wouldn't do for you.'

“I want to see you.” I stared at the message with my heart pounding, as I waited for her reply.
