I ask, trying to hide my nervousness. He hesitates before answering, "Yes, that would be me." I nod, feeling like a nervous wreck. Another Alpha mate, great. I take a deep breath and continue, "Right. Well, if you're going to reject me too, can we at least wait until I'm done with the food? I kind of need the money." I try to keep my voice steady, but I can feel my heart beating in my chest as I wait for his response. Because let's get real, there is no possible way this could work, and I don't want it to work. The word settles heavily, and I stare at it, because that is something I do not have, or do not remember having, and yet my body reacts like I do, like it is holding onto something my mind lost. I type one more message, slower this time. Does it help… when I'm there? The question feels heavier than it should, more personal and more revealing. There is a long pause before the reply comes, long enough that I almost regret asking. Then…Yes. Just that. One word, but it lands deep.

The reply came back almost instant. I can’t. I’ve tried. Alex stared at those words. Something in his chest pulled tight, something he didn’t want to name, something that felt too warm in the cold emptiness of his apartment. He typed again. What do you want from me? This time the pause felt longer. Alex stood there in the kitchen, the suit hanging on the chair, phone warm in his hand, waiting. When the message finally came, it was longer.

You really didn't have to do this, but thank you. It's totally inadequate, but it's all I've got. I hit send and stare at the screen, waiting to be left on read.
