“Well… I didn’t expect to find a guest sneaking in here.”
I hesitated.
“I didn’t know anyone was here. I was just exploring.”
He closed his book and walked toward me, calm and unthreatening so different from Marcus’s intimidating presence. He felt… human. And for a moment, I could breathe easier.
“I’m Martin, Marcus’s brother,” he said with a quiet smile, extending his hand.
I hesitated, then shook it. His hand was warm, firm, but not crushing. Unlike Marcus’s iron grip. For a heartbeat, I felt something I hadn’t felt in forever: safe.
