I held him tight, fingers in his dark hair, heart hammering against his chest.
“I still hate what you’ve become,” I whispered.
“I know,” he muttered, voice raw. “Don’t let go yet. Please, Irene. Please.”
I drew him closer, cradling the back of his head, giving it a careful caress.
We stayed like that until the cold wind cut through us.
Later in bed, I woke to his scream tearing through the dark. Devon thrashed beside me, claws ripping sheets, eyes wide and black.
