Caleb suddenly straightened. “Oh right,” he muttered before reaching inside his coat. My eyes followed his movement curiously until he pulled out an old book wrapped carefully in dark cloth. Immediately, my heartbeat quickened because I recognized the book without even trying. “The Book of Life,” I whispered. Caleb nodded slowly. Josephine’s eyes widened in shock. “You actually brought it here?”

It took Joel almost an hour to walk far enough to reach the town, but his anger still burned through him. He couldn’t believe he trusted Gail. How could he have been so blind? She was just like every other witch. He walked through a small park, looking for someone not paying attention to his phone. Joel finally found one next to an elderly man. The older man had chosen a newspaper over the phone. Joel deftly took it from the park bench. Ducking out of sight, he called Elijah.

“Thank the goddess, you’re alive.” Elora blinked, clutching her head as shards of memories flickered—hands tangled in dark hair, golden eyes blazing in moonlight, a kiss beneath a bleeding sky. But the fragments slipped away like sand through her fingers. “Joel?” she whispered again, softer this time. But he was already turning, the shadows rising to claim him. His steps were heavy, each one ripping another piece of his heart. Outside, the dawn broke over the forest, but Joel felt none of its warmth. He collapsed to his knees far from the ruins, alone. - I told him. He nodded and pulled several books out from one of the stacks and set them in front of me. I opened the top book and ran my fingers over the runes in the title. It was beautifully written as if each word was drawn with love and attention to detail. Now that I looked at it, it reminded me of a combination of Norse and Old English. Nerrian pulled his chair closer and pointed to the first word, speaking it in my mind than out loud in Draygonian. With his help, I repeated the word over and over again until I perfected it.

I'm still waiting to see if the ground under me is reliable. The gravel crunches lightly and I glance up. Joel is coming from the direction of the side gate, and I see his phone in his hand. He sits next to me without asking if it’s okay, like he’s decided that this is his spot too. He doesn’t look at me right away. His focus is somewhere else — the phone, the small leather-bound ledger on his knee. He’s flipping through pages, his pen tapping against the paper before he starts writing. There’s a kind of rhythm to it. He makes a quick call, his voice low, and then another one, this time longer, his tone firmer. He's working.
