He inhaled, steadying himself, then answered softly, “I came across it in the library… through Molly. This book holds truths I couldn’t risk getting out.”
“What truths, Jimmie?” I demanded, my voice a mix of anger and dread.
He lifted the book from the box with both hands, carrying it across the room, placing it on the tall cabinet by the wall with a kind of reverence that made my skin crawl. Then he turned, calm now, almost too calm.
“Devon,” he said evenly, “before I show you what it is, I need you to answer me this first.”
My jaw clenched. “Jimmie, honestly, I’m not in the mood for games. Show me what you’ve been hiding from me already!”
