AURORA'S POV Devon grabbed my phone from my hand and added Aiden’s contact information. “How do you know my passcode?” I frowned. “I had to write your birthday six hundred times when I filled out the paperwork last night. You seem like the predictable type. Again, no” “Offense. I know.” His eyes stayed on my phone, his thumbs moving fast over the screen. “You realize saying that makes whatever you say next automatically offensive, right?” “The way to reach him is four-four-five. He only replies to texts. Sometimes.”

They'll pay me at this new bar I'll be working at, but we don't know how much yet. I'm not allowed to call home or anywhere Amelia would call. Mom had a hard time understanding all this, about the new job in LA, but she trusts Devon. I don't know why, the last time she saw him he was a teen. He's a different person now, but he still acts sweet around her. When the time comes for Aaron to be released, we'll tell her they decided to let him out early on good behavior, even though he got 25 years and has only served three.

He just needed someone to cool down with. That was all. Karina held the glass with both hands and took a sip. “How old are you?” Devon suddenly asked. Karina choked. Was this his attempt at small talk? Pretty pathetic. She laughed to herself. “Nineteen.” Devon looked up. She paused before asking, “You?” “Twenty si—” “Oof,” she exclaimed. “You're old.” Devon blinked at her. Then to his own surprise, a faint smile lingered on his lips.

But I stopped myself. I had no right. So instead, I checked the chart again. Father’s name. Blank Surname: Reyes. Not Frederick’s. Relief washed over me, but it was quickly replaced by dread. She was a single mother. And Devon was ten years old. Which meant she had him at eighteen. The same age she was when I left. My heart sank. I did the math. The month I walked away. Devon’s birthdate.
