He closed the door behind him and I blew some air from my mouth in a sigh. Dinner time arrived almost within the blink of an eye, and I was dumbstruck at how time quickly flew by. Ana showed me the huge library that collected books of every genre and I was delighted to find Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. I had never read the story before, so I thought to give it a try since I had nothing more to do.

The outburst made me turn toward him in surprise. His eyes widened in admiration as he carefully pulled out the novel I’d been reading—Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations.

I noticed he didn’t add a specific date and time to his invitation. Mother kept up her chatter. “And first editions.” She clapped her hands together. “Such a collection. Or so I’ve heard. Well, many of us have heard. A first edition of Jane Eyre, all three volumes. And Dickens, I believe you have a Dickens?” “Uh, yes, ‘Christmas Carol,’” he muttered. “Chapman and Hall, 1843.” “Think of it.” Mother turned first to my father and then to Mrs. Carville. “Imagine owning a first edition of anything by Charles Dickens, let alone ‘A Christmas Carol.’”

The way Dickens portrays the characters were well written out and Pip is one character I sympathize with the most. He really went through a lot."
