His eyes widened in admiration as he carefully pulled out the novel I’d been reading—Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations. Before I could respond, Eleanor's voice from my phone hit my ear–I realized she had already picked up the call.

Well, many of us have heard. A first edition of Jane Eyre, all three volumes. And Dickens, I believe you have a Dickens?” “Uh, yes, ‘Christmas Carol,’” he muttered. “Chapman and Hall, 1843.” “Think of it.” Mother turned first to my father and then to Mrs. Carville. “Imagine owning a first edition of anything by Charles Dickens, let alone ‘A Christmas Carol.’”
