I may not have much but I'd like to keep a hold on my dignity. I kick a small pebble that skitters into the darkness of the pavement as I walk down, I hear festive sounds coming from the pub at the end of this street but I ignore it. No use hoping to have something you never will. Even though I have magical blood, I'm a fire slifer. I have no clue how to harness my power so it's basically useless. I've only had one or two incidents of nearly burning a house down but other than that I feel basically human.

**"The fire remembers. To pass, you must face your truth." Suddenly, a new figure appeared. **Silas.** Daisy stepped back. “No.” But the figure didn’t move. It just started. Then it spoke. "You killed me. But you never understood me." “You used me!” Daisy shouted. “You hunted me! Lied to me!” “I taught you fire,” the figure said calmly. “I made you strong.” “You made me hate myself.” “You still don’t understand what the flame is.” Rosa drew her blade. “This is just a test, Daisy. Don’t fall for it.”

Third-Person POV: Sophie's voice continued on the other end. "The fire was massive that day. By the time the firefighters put it out, the whole place was rubble. It's such a shame. Beckett was so young and died in that fire. At least you managed to save Mr. Miller..." The rest of Sophie's words turned into a buzzing noise in Vanessa's ears. The moment she heard that Beckett never made it out of the fire, she froze. Beckett was not rescued? He was dead?

“God, I hope I'm wrong.” * * * “He wasn’t wrong, was he?” Dylan asked. Bonnie shook her head. “It gets worse, though.” * * * She remembered the fire chief saying that the cause of the fire was her stove. He said that she'd placed a book too close to the gas cook-top and it had caught fire. She said that was impossible, but the fire investigator was adamant. She had put the book there. According to his report, she'd set the paperback copy of a book called, “You're Next” on the stove. It was a crime thriller by an author she'd never even heard of. She had told the police it wasn't her book, but there was no way to prove it.

Seraphina’s POV The flames were dying. Ash curled upward in the suffocating dark of the library, thin spirals of smoke clinging to the vaulted ceiling like desperate prayers that refused to rise. The last of the glowing pages fell into cinders on the stone floor, and the light it had given us—the fragile, blessed shield—dissolved into nothing. Beyond that circle of dying fire, the monsters closed in, shadows weaving between bookshelves, claws dragging over wood and stone, eyes like fragments of the abyss.

I had thought that it would burn me – taking a peek at the two women who were with me, they were back away from the fire, Leah patted the small flame that got on her pants, Lyv helping her put it out. I could still feel the heat, but what was odd was that the flames didn’t burn me. I lowered my hands slowly, looking at the book – now burning yet the pages were intact. My heart beat fast as I walked back to the podium. I blink, there was something new. I blinked again. I rubbed it, feeling the sting I had felt when Leah brought me to Neverwhere.

Dante countered, his accented tone darkening. I nodded. The story had been the greatest hit of all time. I had just left the military when the word spread like wildfire.
