I preferred to keep it that way. I ordered a breakfast sandwich and a coffee. Damon ordered a vampire coffee, and when our food arrived at our table, his cup was steaming and dark and smelled like the metallic tang of blood mixed with coffee beans. My head spun a little, mouth going dry. I sat back an inch in my chair to get away from it and pulled out my herbal medicine book to keep myself busy. I didn’t want a repeat of the vampire wine incident. I had barely opened the book to the first page before Damon reached across the table and plucked it from my hands.

If you followed the steady descriptions of vampires in movies, on television, and in books, they drank blood— and maybe some booze— but not coffee. Even though I was the only one there who was aware of the fact that I’d entertained Geoffrey’s accusations, I felt completely foolish. I wanted to run and hide. Taking someone from this place to feed would be too risky, this means compelling someone to let me feed, and then forget.
