Perhaps it was for the best. Actually, it was good that they weren't here, as it saved me a lot of trouble. In the last few days I had left, I could quietly erase every trace of myself from this house. 12 days before leaving the country, I burned the little notebook where I had recorded my family's preferences and tastes to ashes. From now on, I would never have to study them so carefully again. Seven days before leaving, I permanently deleted the dozens of gigabytes of rare music resources I had collected for William from my computer.

I begin scanning titles desperately, hoping to find something useful. Maybe something like: How To Stop Embarrassing Yourself By Flirting With Straight Men. Or perhaps: Self-Control: Please, For The Love Of God. Nothing. Not even close. I feel deeply offended. There is absolutely a market for those books. I cannot possibly be the only person suffering from this very specific life crisis. Rachel drifts down the aisle behind me, pretending to browse

But somewhere along the way, I had lost pieces of myself that I wasn’t sure I wanted to give up. I stood there for a long moment, fighting with the feelings brewing in my chest. The woman I had been before Sylvester wouldn’t have hesitated to reclaim what was hers. She wouldn’t have waited for someone else to decide when and how she could access her own belongings, her own past. Then, before I could lose my nerve, I made a decision. I was going to get my book. My mother’s book, with all her writings about me. The truth she scrawled like a mad person, calling me a monster with purple eyes. If there were answers to questions I didn’t even know I had, they might be in those pages.

I had been on a journey of self-discovery, a journey of healing and growth, and I had finally found what I was looking for. I wanted to be a writer. I wanted to write about my healing journey, about the struggles and the triumphs, about the darkness and the light. I wanted to share my story with others, to help them see that they were not alone, that there was hope and healing to be found.

I open the box, and pull out the first book, and I frown even harder because it is titled - Your Dad Will Do, by a Katee Robert. Feeling realy confused, I pull out the second - Priest, by a Sierra Simone, these books are giving me a certain vibe. I pull out another, laughing at the incredulous title - Does It Hurt, by an H.D Carlton, feeling really curious, I open a random page, and frown as I try to make sense of the scene. I gasp as I begin to make sense of it, my mouth falls open at the full realization of what it actually is, the book falls out of my hand with a resounding thud.

In the simplest of words, home is where you find the meaning that helps define you—who you are, and who you hope to be. I found mine at sixteen. Not in a place, or a person, but in books - thanks to Ashley. She practically forced a book into my hands, claiming it was her holy grail. I didn’t love the ending at first. But when I heard a sequel was coming, I read it the moment it released. Seeing the MMC'S perspective changed everything. I realized the first book ended the way it had to.

In the end, the inquisitive one won but first, I listened for footsteps and when I could make out none, I got off the bed and went for the book, flicking its first page open. The only person who could give me a book was Zena but it was also weird, what kind of book it was. It wasn’t the usual one we both read and enjoyed. It was some sort of self-help book and its title was even more weird. “Kicking trauma’s butt with style!”
