She nodded, though her stomach knotted tighter. She wondered if this was care, or control, or some murky blend of both.
The doctor arrived around noon—a man in his sixties, with a kind face and eyes that had seen more than most. He greeted her with a firm handshake and a reassuring smile. Alex waited outside, pacing restlessly, while the doctor conducted his examination, asking gentle, probing questions about her “amnesia.”
