Then she goes up to him and applies soft muzzle bites. In one swift movement, he pinned me under him, and I instantly rolled on my back so that he looked down into my wolf's eyes. His head dipped to lick my muzzle, moving to my mane. Then our icy noses touched and I licked him back and push him away. He growled at me because he wanted to be close to me in that position, but I scampered away knowing that he was chasing behind me. My wolf enjoyed being released after being cooped up for too long.

I should wield this dagger as long as I could. Five wolves appeared to my right, growling and drooling, and three more to my left with the same approach. These animals don't look like anything from their natural environment. They looked disfigured and beaten. Most of their wounds and lesions are still visible on their bodies, now darkened and rotting emitting a foul smell. None of them have ears intact, with half of it gone or completely ripped off from their heads. Their furs had fallen out, leaving bald patches that showed the dirty scalp.

I wince when I see one wolf bite the jaw of another and then howl. Noah and I proceed to go inside. I’m a few steps behind her when I feel a familiar aura and turn around. That's when I see the dog she was talking about. It is, in fact not a dog, but a wolf. A massive one, with fur that looks silver at first, but as he moves, the colour changes, flickering between icy white, pale blue, and soft grey. I immediately recognise the unique shade of moonstone fur and the piercing gaze of his scarlet eyes. “Oh my God!” I gasp. “Jagger!”

Azriel immediately tried to snap his jaws at my ankle but Marcus slammed the butt of his heavy rifle directly into the wolf's skull to keep him pinned to the stone. "I have him secured right here so you can go find your mate before the rest of the Crescent Moon guards realize what just happened," Marcus yelled over the loud blaring sirens.

It catches my arm with its teeth. Pain explodes through me, but I don't let go. I punch it in the snout with my free hand, hard enough to make it release me. We separate, both bleeding, both wary. The rogue is panting, foam dripping from its jaws. And that's when I see it. Around its neck, barely visible through the matted fur, is a collar. Not a normal collar. This one glows with faint symbols. Magic. Someone put a spell on this wolf. Someone made it go rogue.

“That’s normal the first few times. Your wolf’s been asleep too long. She’s stretching. Talk to her. Tell her it’s safe.” I focused harder. Umfa, I thought. I’m here. I’m not running. We’re together now. The pain sharpened in my jaw. My teeth ached as they lengthened slightly. A muzzle started to push forward—short, incomplete. Fur covered my shoulders, my neck. My eyes burned. When I opened them, the world looked sharper, colors brighter. Silver light flickered in my vision. I held it for maybe ten seconds. Then it slipped. The fur vanished in waves. My bones snapped back. I collapsed forward onto my hands, breathing hard.

I murmur, pulling the door open. She shrinks further into the corner, her ears flattening as she growls again. Her head moves to the side when I move, and I notice a chunky black collar around her neck. The metallic box strapped to it is unmistakable, and I can’t stop the snarl that bursts from me. “They put a fucking shock collar on my mate!” The wolves behind me growl as well, setting off a tense air in the room. Aurora’s wolf yelps and cowers back again, practically shrinking in fear. The acrid scent of distress fills the air, mixing with the blood and filth that already fills my senses.

I can feel his presence beside me, a comforting anchor in the chaos that surrounds us, but he is unable to come to my aid as I thrash against the sticky tendrils that bind me. Just when I feel myself slipping into despair, a blur of fur and teeth emerges from the shadows. Mabel, in her majestic wolf form, bounds toward me with a primal growl, her eyes ablaze with determination. With a swift motion, she sinks her sharp teeth into the webbing, tearing it away with a strength born of instinct and experience.
