Eww, what the hell was that? Shaking my head, I started walking toward the library. Ever since yesterday, I haven't contacted Dorian about what happened in the library. I wanted to reach out to him but it was evident that he needed privacy. I took a deep breath when I saw Dorian already sitting on a chair, his head hidden behind the book cover. Smiling to myself, I sat down beside him, "Hi." Face still covered by the book, he greeted me, "Hey." And then we were both quiet. I opened the book and allowed him the time to initiate the conversation. I was flipping through the pages when Dorian peeked out of the book, "Thanks."

And then nothing else, because he was Cain, and two sentences were frequently more than most people managed in an hour, and I had found, over the last several weeks, that I had learned to hear them correctly. Dorian was beside me. He had a book — not the book, a different one, something he had found in the palace library in the three weeks of the inquiry when he was not counter-arguing obstructions or reading territorial law. He was not reading it now. He was at the table, present in the specific way he was present — slightly apart, entirely there.
