Draco stepped from the mist. He wore no armor, no cloak, no crown. His clothes were simple, black as bone dust, his hair loose around him. He did not walk; he glided. Each step spread decay into the grass, a trail of dead earth following his heels. When he reached the center of the valley, he stopped, like a king settling into his throne. “I expected you,” he said. The voice was silk, dripping with poison. A ripple of fear traveled through the wolves behind us. I squeezed my weapons until my knuckles ached.

He flipped one open, scanning the lines of text, but his eyes weren’t really reading. Every few moments, his gaze drifted toward the couch—toward her. And each time, he told himself it meant nothing. That it was just habit. Instinct. But his jaw tightened anyway. Elena knelt on the rug, watching Draco’s small hands move with careful concentration. He had drawn a house first—crooked but detailed, with a little chimney puffing smoke. Now he was adding people. “That’s you,” he said, pointing to a stick figure with long hair. “And that’s me.”

•CHAPTER 3 13 months ago Draco cautiously surveyed the narrow street, ensuring that no one was following him. This mission was to remain a secret, at least till he decides to make it open. He pulled his cloak tighter around himself as he made his way down an alleyway overgrown with algae. He watched children playfully throwing snowball-like balls and wrestling in their wolf forms. He observed a woman tending to an apple tree outside her house. Suddenly, he was seized and pulled off the alleyway, finding himself in a dark room with his supposed captor shutting the door behind him.

Madchen closed her eyes, and waited for the worst, tears streaming down her flushed cheeks. Suddenly, she felt Jason’s grip loosen on her, then heard an almighty thump. She opened her eyes to see Drago standing over her supervisor, glaring a hole through him. “Is this how you treat all your employees?” His voice was calm, too calm. Jason, now petrified, backed away on his elbows, putting space between him and the terrifying doctor. Watching Drago right now, in this moment, Madchen thought he really did resemble a dragon, on the verge of lighting Jason on fire.
