Blade came out with his usual all black clothing—a big black sweatshirt, a black baggy jean, black glasses, black face cap, black sneakers— and a revolver carefully tucked by his side. To my shock, the passenger door opened and a girl came out. She was obviously young, probably fourteen or fifteen with red hair and a round hazel eyes which peered at me through the glass of the coffee shop. I couldn’t help but wonder who she was and why Blade had decided to bring her along. They both shared words before walking towards the coffee shop. “Emily!” Blade called as he walked inside with his companion right behind him. “I’m right here,” I said waving my hands in the air to draw his attention.

I asked with interest. "Ah..." he touched his chin as if he is thinking. “Ah! Their power is Ill—” what he said was cut off by an explosion causing us to turn to the source of that explosion. My eyes widened when I saw five vampires with black eyes. Dervy. They are outside the shield and trying to break the shield with their dark magic. "Let the hunting begin," Adrian said happily then grinned and quickly ran towards the Dervy group. Their father also followed him.

I kick the door shut, the magnetic seal hissing into place. My hands are still glowing, the silver threads pulsing so hard I can hear the hum in my teeth. I shove Marcus’s unconscious body into the gap behind the heavy mahogany crib. I scramble for the bedpost, finding the notch. The Phantom Blade slides out—a cold, titanium needle. I hear his boots. Fast. Purposeful. I pull the sleeves of my robe down, tucking my hands into the fabric, turning my back to the door as I huddle by the crib.

I didn't hesitate and pinned the nanny's hand to the arm of the chair, digging the sharp tip of the blade deep into the fleshy part of her palm. The nanny let out a blood-curdling scream, her eyes snapping open as she jolted upright. The so-called faint was gone in an instant, replaced by a face of pure, agonizing pain. Dante froze. He stared at the blood dripping from the blade, then looked up at me, his golden eyes wide with genuine shock. He hadn't expected a doctor to draw blood before he even had a chance to move. Blade forgot the deer. He turned and stalked toward the new thing. The weak, wounded thing that smelled of enemy. The rage had a new target. He loomed over her, a giant of shadow and fangs. The girl looked up, her face pale with pain and terror. She didn’t scream. She just whimpered again, her voice a broken thread. “P-please… don’t… help me…” *Kill her, * Blade’s thought was a dark pulse. *She smells of them. Kill her and howl our pain to the moon.*

I didn’t even breathe before the man pulled something from inside his jacket that looked like a blade, sharp enough that the weak chandelier glow caught the edge and threw it straight at me. “No!” Caleb shouted. Everything slowed. The scream ripped from Lucy. Derek’s body lunging forward. Adrian’s hand was crushing tighter around my waist, like he could shield me with his own bones. But the blade was already slashing toward me. Straight at the scar hidden under my glove. I couldn’t move and couldn’t scream. I couldn’t even do anything but stare as the silver edge came closer. And then… It didn’t hit. My wrist, my cursed, burning wrist, exploded in light.
