The dragon thrummed violently, wings pressing, muscles taut. The shadows surged one last time, but their combined magic struck with irresistible force. The light of silver and gold enveloped the courtyard, pushing the shadows back, fracturing them into nothing.
The explosion of light left both of them gasping, standing in the middle of the scarred courtyard, sweat and ash coating their skin. Verath held her close, hands steady on her waist, their bond humming, alive, unbroken.
