I stood in the corridor and breathed for the first time in a hundred and forty meters.
Then I looked up.
Davina stood six feet away. Both feet planted, weight balanced, weapon raised, barrel level, aimed at the center of my chest. Not shaking, her eyes were clear, direct, carrying something that was not anger, not fear, not the performance of either.
Certainty.
She had been here long enough that her breathing was completely even. She had been here long enough to stand with her arms raised without fatigue showing in her shoulders.
She had been waiting.
