Echo was silent, having retreated when we both agreed that we didn’t really want this. “Hi.” Her voice was sweet and sounded like music to my ears. I didn’t want to like her voice or her face or anything about her. I turned around to look at her, to take her in fully. Her eyes were a golden brown, her hair a deep auburn. When she smiled it felt like I wanted to be the reason that she smiled and the feelings inside of me were threatening to overwhelm me, even though I didn’t even know her name. “Hi.”

It was close to high-noon, but she was sleeping so soundly. Trying to speak, only grunts and groans escaped me. My voice had faded into the night, thankful that the last words that Odessa heard from me were my undying love for her. If I ever failed in my endeavors to fix my voice, at least those last few words would echo into her mind.

It’s normal and warm, and for a second, I let myself forget the blood, the knife, the way Evan’s eyes looked as I bled out. I just laugh with my best friend. I missed this. But the world has a way of reminding me what’s real. As I’m walking home, I hear it again. That voice. A sharp whisper right next to my ear, too soft for anyone else to hear.

Echo enquired softly. "No," Ava replied. "But I am not sure who you are." Echo tilted her head. "I am what you left behind." AVA We brought her home. Echo did not weep. Did not laugh. She made an observation. She sat near Vale on the couch, not blinking while she watched cartoons. She drew lines on her wrist when no one spoke to her.
