Romans & histoires Fading Echoes

Yet another scream rippled through my throat as I felt the yet another unimaginable pain, I felt as though I would lose my mind if it didn’t stop, I felt as though my life would drain from me slowly but surely. “Just a little bit more, Alexa. Push”. The voices were suddenly unclear and distant; like voices talking in an empty glass room, the bass and echoes, it all sounded so far. Was I fading out? Was I drifting off? Would this be how I die?

He had a subtle sense of humor when he let it show. Then the lights flickered once. Twice. And went out completely. The archive room plunged into total darkness. The sudden blackness hit like a wall. Grace couldn’t see her own hand in front of her face. “Miles?” she called out, her voice echoing a little in the big room. No answer at first. Then she heard his breathing; fast and shallow. “Miles, are you okay?” A chair scraped. She heard him moving, then a soft thud like he had backed into a shelf.

I'll smash this urn, and she will never rest in peace! Jason never thought that Felicity would accidentally out herself. He never thought that everything back then was orchestrated by her alone. However, there was no time to process it. He lunged forward to protect the urn…only for his weakened body to betray him. He was only a second too late. His legs gave out. In horrifying slow motion, he watched the urn slip from Felicity's hands. It hit the ground and shattered. Ashes scattered in every direction, dissolving into the thin rain, vanishing without a trace.

As I felt the medication work, I looked up at my reflection in the mirror, pale and haggard as a banshee, and the tears finally tipped over. The man I loved was so close, just a few steps away. I wanted to tell him that I was in pain, and that I almost couldn't hold on any longer. I wanted him to hold me, if only for a little while. But I couldn't do that now, nor could I do it anymore in the future. In my daze, I thought I heard his voice calling my name from outside the room, so soft it was almost unreal. "Melody…" A hallucination, I thought. The pain had finally made me lose my mind.

"Just beating her to death is too easy. Marcus, prepare the Soul Extraction device." The Soul Extraction was one of the pack's cruelest tortures. It forcibly tore the wolf spirit from the body, an agonizing and irreversible desecration. "Let Valentina watch as her mother's wolf is ripped away, piece by piece." Hearing this, my mother laughed again, a crazed, broken sound, tears of blood and sorrow streaming down her face. "You can kill me..." she rasped. "But my daughter is truly dead... You've lost her forever!"

"That kid's not mine—I'm just his godfather. You don't have to worry about Chloe, either, because I'll make sure they're gone once Peanut's discharged. Then, we'll go on that trip." He must have realized how flimsy his excuse sounded because he kept glancing at me, trying to read my reaction. When I calmly nodded, he finally focused on the road. Halfway home, Chloe's call popped up on the car screen. Ethan flinched and hesitated briefly before tapping on the answer button. "Ethan, Peanut's crying for you! Please come back!" In the background, Peanut's tearful voice came through. "Where are you, Daddy? I had a nightmare, and I want you here!"

It was too deep, too absolute, until— Whispers. They drifted around me like cobwebs brushing against my skin. Soft, disjointed fragments that sent shivers racing down my spine. I couldn’t make out the words, couldn’t string them together into something that made sense, but they were circling, overlapping, sinking into my bones. A chorus of half-formed syllables, as though the air itself was trying to speak in a language I wasn’t meant to understand. I held my breath, straining to catch something clear, but the harder I listened, the faster they seemed to scatter, dissolving into static.

**Kelly Thompson's POV** The silence isn't silent. It's a vacuum, a pressure that gnaws at the eardrums, leaving behind a phantom tinnitus-a high-pitched whine that isn't sound but the *absence* of it. The Valley of Echoes stretches before us, its jagged obsidian spires clawing at a sky stripped of color. Eden's breaths are shallow, deliberate, his hands clenched to stifle the faint hum still leaking from his scars. The Cantor's melody is quieter now, but not gone. A sleeping beast, not a dead one.

🌼 Opening Part 68—where voices meet reflection, and healing becomes visible. Ren now begins curating an exhibit called Echoes That Grew—a gallery of Before-and-After sound entries, revealing not transformation for performance’s sake, but arrival after wandering. This chapter traces how people discover that even their own voices can hold them gently. Franc called it time travel by tone. The concept was simple yet profound, a way to capture the essence of personal growth through sound. They converted a corner of the studio into the Echoes That Grew booth, a sanctuary where visitors could explore the evolution of their own voices.

It was more than a goodbye. Leah sat beside him, her fingers gently wrapped around his hand. She didn’t speak. She didn’t need to. She knew what the silence meant. She felt it too. That impossible choice had scarred them both. Maya and Ben joined them, both pale and worn out. They gave the final report. “It’s gone,” Maya said quietly, her voice stripped of emotion. “The Echo is completely destroyed. It’s been fragmented into nothing. There’s no chance of it ever coming back. Not even a single line of code remains.”
