Just as Zara turned to leave again, Elizabeth stopped her, “Did you cry or what? Why are your eyes red?”
Zara swallowed, her eyes darting around in search of a lie to tell, “Umm…something got into my eyes during the run.”
“Oh, sorry dear.”
Zara nodded, quickly hurrying upstairs before she could ask another question again.
“Get the kids ready for breakfast.” Elizabeth shouted after her as she returned to the dining table where she arranged the plates.
Inside her bathroom, her reflection stared back— tired, swollen-eyed, but lighter somehow. For years she’d built walls high enough to shut out everything, even herself. But now… a few cracks let the light in.
