Elizabeth Stone shuddered. She wrapped her arms around herself and stared out the back window of the sleek black sedan as it wound along the darkened streets of Montreal. People strolled down the block, hands in their pockets, chins neatly tucked to their chests to shield their faces from the biting wind. Men held phones to their ears; women struggled with their shopping bags. It seemed like a regular evening. An ordinary night. But it wasn't ordinary. It couldn't be. Hours trickled by and I thought she wouldn’t come anymore so I shut my book and shifted back only for the door to open.

After all, all was fair in love and war. Wednesday came by and left in a flash. Thursday moseyed on down and introduced itself with a cold morning breeze. After hopping on the subway, pushing past people and arriving to work in one piece, overseeing the shipment of a fifty boxes of fragile bulbs and going to the warehouse to take stock, all without breakfast, Elizabeth was beat. As she stood by her office window gazing out at the passing cars and listening to the sound of the traffic, she stifled a yawn. In a few hours, she would go home. All she had to do was hang on. Hang on and-- she stifled another abrupt yawn. Hang on and breathe. "Have you had anything to eat today?"
