Elle wiped the wax away with a hand as steady as stone. Rounding the bend, Elaine stopped in her tracks. In the center of the room was a woman with eyes the color of ash. She glanced their way for a moment, but then resumed to her book. The volume she was reading was massive, maybe as large as Elaine. It was leather-bound and intricately sewn. The book rested atop a cherry wood table that towered in the old library. The woman stood behind the podium; her old, but unworked hands, smoothing out the precious pages.

It felt like someone was swinging a hammer against the inside of Eliza’s skull. The early morning dew caused a damp muskiness on the earth that blended with the mold and dust that burrowed beneath the thick layer of leaves where she lay her aching burden; assaulting her nose and adding to her misery. Her chocolate colored eyes felt pinned shut, but her hearing was abnormally acute. By the sounds around her, she sensed her surroundings were familiar ones. If she was correct, she was near the small cave that was nestled in a knoll that began the acres of woods at the far end of her family’s farm. It was a place that she’d discovered at a young age and had frequented whenever she required

The headlights were then fifty yards away. The low predatory roar of the engine was deafening. It vibrated through the asphalt until the keys of her keyboard began to chatter against the frame. The gold ink she had written on the second page still glowed, a faint stubborn amber light pulsing through the leather.

The room was empty, save for a pedestal at its center, upon which rested a small, leather-bound book. Elliot approached cautiously, his flashlight fixed on the pedestal. The book was worn, its cover cracked and stained, but the Ashworth crest was unmistakable on its surface. “This must be it,” he said, reaching for the book. Emma grabbed his arm. “Wait. What if it’s another trap?” Elliot hesitated, the air in the chamber pressing down on him like a warning. But something about the book pulled at him, a deep, unshakable instinct that told him he needed to see what was inside.

“We all need to rest,” Willow told him with a smile. She slipped into the walk-in closet to pull on some clothes. Willow walked out in a long, pale blue night gown. “You’re going to bed?” Elmer asked. It was a stupid question, seeing as his mother wore a night gown. “I think I will read a little,” Willow said, holding up her Kindle. She was reading Lucee Lovett’s book. Hot and steamy, just the way she loved it. Elmer kissed his mother on the forehead.

“God I love a man who reads,” she breathed and laid her head on the desk, spent. * * * The sex out of their system—for the movement, at least—Eleanor and Daniel made diligent progress on his library. Daniel sorted, reclassified while Eleanor dusted the bookcases in question and reshelved the newly Deweyed books in proper order.

She pushed open the door to Iris’s room and immediately heard voices inside. She recognized them instantly Asha and Iris were discussing something, but the moment they noticed Elle walking in, the conversation abruptly stopped. “What was happening?” Elle asked as she sat down beside them. “Nothing, just random things,” Asha replied casually. “Oh.” “Look what I brought for you,” Elle said proudly, placing the books on the table before pushing them toward Iris with a wide grin. Iris looked at them, memories instantly flooding her mind. There was a time when books like these had completely consumed her thoughts and made her happier than anything else in the world.
